- Here, we can see the power of the president of the USA. (Political power) With just one decision, he will influence a whole decade. He is explaining to his population that they must win the space race to show that the USA are the most powerful country in the world.

The idea of Progress
- Progress is seen through the idea of becoming better through difficult goals. It means that nobody can progress with only simple tasks. Kennedy explains that if the USA are to progress, they must aim at very difficult goals and to forget about their comfort.
- There is also the idea of scientific and technological progress. Kennedy mentions « new metal alloys, some of which have not yet been invented ». It means that it will be necessary to invent, to create if they want to succeed. So, progress is necessary in order to succeed this mission.

Myths and Heroes
- Kennedy is using the myth of the moon. Nobody has ever been there because it has always seemed impossible. Only through science fiction books can you see it. But here, he is announcing that in less than 10 years, an American will walk on the surface of the Moon. He is simply announcing the realization of a myth.
- He could be seen as a political hero since he is taking enormous risks in telling that to his population. He could be ridiculous if this project was to fail. He is becoming the leader of the greatest human exploration of all times. So, he represents this idea of brave explorers.

- Kennedy is announcing this great project. The moment here is a political speech which means that all Americans will be aware of the situation because it is broadcasted live on television. This is an exchange with the American population as well as a challenge sent to the Soviets across the world.
